Every year on April 4th, we celebrate the independence of Senegal. Therefore, I’d like to take this moment to share with you a part of Senegal’s colonial history. Even though I have spent a lot of times in Senegal, I don’t always think of its history. However, I do think it is important to look back on history and think about how we got to where we are today. Let’s refresh on some history!

I have already taken you along la Corniche Ouest de Dakar and the Monument of African Renaissance. Today, I want to take you with me to the Place du Souvenir Africain et de la diaspora here in Dakar. As you may remember, this is also where Black Panther was being displayed. Place du Souvenir is on the Corniche ouest, just next to Sea Plaza. Other than that, there are many things you can do at Place du Souvenir and also many things you can see. Today, I want to share with you some of the things I have done here during my stay in Senegal. The other day, I talked to you about la Corniche Ouest de Dakar. Today, I want to talk to you about le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, also known as the Monument of African Renaissance. The first time I visited this monument was in 2010. It was also the first time in 12 years that I had visited Senegal. I remember visiting the monument with my mom and sisters. We all loved it. I also remember visiting it in 2013 with my parents and two younger siblings. This time, we went inside and saw the museum which comprises of art and the story of historic people of African descent. Since I’m sharing some things you can do along la Corniche Ouest in the next couple of days, I wanted to include the Monument. Let’s get into some African Renaissance!

I had the opportunity to visit île de Gorée or Gorée island again. The last time I was there was actually November 2017, so it was nice to be back. Believe it or not, but I haven’t actually spent much time by the sea or in the swimming pool. Therefore, I decided to team up with Fadieye and visit île de Gorée. In my other blogpost about Gorée Island, I share a lot of pictures with less context. Today, it will be different! Let’s get into this beautiful, historic island 🙂

For the first time, I went to îles de la Madeleine. I have always seen the beautiful pictures, but I have never actually visited. When Fadieye invited me to join her to the islands, I did not hesitate! It was actually after #ELITE2018 that we decided to go to îles de la Madeleine to relax. We did not stay all day, but we definitely made it worth our while. Today, it will be different! Let’s get into this beautiful, historic island 🙂 (more…)
