Independence Day: Senegal

Every year on April 4th, we celebrate the independence of Senegal. Therefore, I’d like to take this moment to share with you a part of Senegal’s colonial history. Even though I have spent a lot of times in Senegal, I don’t always think of its history. However, I do think it is important to look back on history and think about how we got to where we are today. Let’s refresh on some history!

Youssou N’dour at King Fahd Palace

A long while back, I went to Youssou N’dour at King Fahd Palace, here in Dakar. Since Tigo had some tickets left, we got the opportunity to go! It was amazing! Just like the White Party, it was a dinnerparty with live performances of Youssou N’dour and various Senegalese artists and comedians. We were invited, and of course: WE WENT! It is my first time going to Youssou N’dour. In this post, I will take you with me on this amazing night. Let’s get into the party!

Traditional Senegalese Clothing

Merry Christmas! For the holidays, I want to talk about traditional Senegalese clothing. As some may know, Senegalese people (read: women) LOVE to show off their Senegalese Traditional clothing. Other than showing off their clothing, Senegalese people love parties! There is always something to celebrate here in Senegal. There is always someone you know that is going to get married, had a child or there is a holiday on the corner. And even when there is nothing to celebrate, Senegalese people bring out their best attire on Fridays. Just look at this picture! Look at how colorful they are dressed. I definitely think this picture is aesthetically pleasing and super colorful! All in all, there is ALWAYS someone showing off their yéré olof. I’ll share some with you.

Village artisanal de Soumbedioune

Today, I want to take you with me to the Village Artisanal de Soumbedioune here in Dakar. I personally think that le village artisanal of Soumbedioune is one of Dakar’s hidden gems. One of the last times I went there was with Youma, in order to photograph some items for her webshop! Today, I want to tell you more about the different products you can find and also the different types of Artisans that work at the village. Let’s get into an artisanal mood!

As you may remember, this is also where Black Panther was being displayed. Place du Souvenir is on the Corniche ouest, just next to Sea Plaza. Other than that, there are many things you can do at Place du Souvenir and also many things you can see. Today, I want to share with you some of the things I have done here during my stay in Senegal. Let’s get into it!

Monument de la renaissance africaine

The other day, I talked to you about la Corniche Ouest de Dakar. Today, I want to talk to you about le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, also known as the Monument of African Renaissance. The first time I visited this monument was in 2010. It was also the first time in 12 years that I had visited Senegal. I remember visiting the monument with my mom and sisters. We all loved it. I also remember visiting it in 2013 with my parents and two younger siblings. This time, we went inside and saw the museum which comprises of art and the story of historic people of African descent. Since I’m sharing some things you can do along la Corniche Ouest in the next couple of days, I wanted to include the Monument. Let’s get into some African Renaissance!

La Corniche Ouest

A popular spot in Dakar is La Corniche Ouest. I really love walking, so
I have walked on la corniche many, many times. First of all, la Corniche is super long. You could walk from just after the Monument of African Renaissance to Soumbedioune or even further. Once, I walked from Almadies to Sea Plaza. The weather was amazing!! I remember always driving on the corniche and finding it so beautiful, and I have always wanted to take beautiful pictures along the ocean. If I would tell Senegalese people I walked along the Corniche, they would think I’m crazy. Senegalese people don’t like walking lol. Let’s get into Dakar’s not so hidden gem! 🙂
